Two Moors Festival Project

[Project String Quartet] was brilliant at getting the children to talk and ask questions and the Quartet were wonderful, played so beautifully but were warm and friendly and so approachable with the children.
— Two Moors Festival, Margi Jervoise

PSQ’s recent project at the Two Moors Festival was not only an excellent few days filled with music performances, presentations and activities, it was also the first project for the new addition to PSQ’s Young Professional Quartets - the Kyan Quartet!

Over 350 students across five schools took part in our educational presentations on the 30 September and 1 October 2021, geared towards introducing them to the instruments of the string quartet and the wide range of chamber music repertoire.

As part of each school visit, the Kyan quartet performed excerpts from exciting pieces from the string quartet canon, including:

Haydn Quartet op 20 no 4 - Finale
Britten Quartet no 1 - 2nd mov
Schubert Quartet “Death & The Maiden” - 1st mov

The Kyan Quartet performing to Hampton Primary School students.

We were so impressed with how engaged and involved all of the children were in the sessions, actively asking questions and taking part in our musical games and activities! We were glad to heard from Hatherleigh school that the session even inspired students to start learning a musical instrument!

“Hatherleigh school was very fortunate to have the Kyan String Quartet, organised by the Two Moors festival, visit school to run a musical workshop for over fifty Y4 & Y6 children. Although many had experienced our Silver Band in Hatherleigh, few had heard classical music played live and it was fascinating to see them so enthralled by it. The workshop was well run and kept the children engaged for a full hour. It was a huge privilege to hear the String Quartet play and make it fun by asking the children to guess the names of well-known tunes by just playing the rhythm. It also provided an opportunity for the children to ask the professional musicians about their lives. It has inspired many of the to take up musical instruments and some to learn stringed instruments. The workshop really opened the children's eyes to a possibility of a career in music, which they might otherwise never have considered.“
