School Projects
Project String Quartet’s school projects offer a wide variety of activities led by Young Professional Quartets and an International Artist, our projects can be tailor-made to the needs of a school and its students, allowing you to create the best itinerary from our perform, create and inspire activities. The length of a PSQ school project ranges from a two-day visit to a longer residency over the course of the academic year.
School projects include interactive concert presentations, composition projects, composition projects, masterclasses and coaching, opportunity for instrumentalists to play alongside our Young Professional String Quartets, and large scale projects such as a Junior Strings Day, Collaborative Music Creation Days and more.
All of the activities are designed to work as open sessions and are available for all students to view - we encourage as wide an audience as possible!

With 9 International Artists, 3 Young Professional Quartets and a range of activities and timescales, we are able to provide an exciting, varied and flexible project that fits your needs and budget.
Discuss your project
We will work closely with you to help create your ideal project, whether you have a clear understanding of what you want or would like some guidance on developing your school project.
Confirm and arrange
Once you are happy with your project plan, we can confirm the dates with our musicians and create the project itinerary, including details of repertoire and educational materials.
Supporting your project
On the day, our musicians will be on site in advance and will provide any materials required to perform. The PSQ team will be available to support the musicians and ensure your project runs smoothly.
PSQ ACTIVITIES
All of our school projects are designed to be flexible to the needs of your school, offering a tailor-made experience that engages students of all ages and musical backgrounds. Choose from the wide range of PSQ activities available and create a bespoke educational experience that will excite and inspire.
PERFORM
Develop musicianship, playing technique and listening skills through listening to and performing with professional musicians.
Formal Evening Concerts
International Artists and Young Professionals Quartets perform alongside each other in a formal evening concert. These performances are featured early in the project and are followed up with an educational presentation to students to further engage with the music and explore the technical skills behind a performance; such as teamwork, communication and listening.
Chamber Music Coaching
School ensembles will be taught by a Young Professional Quartet to develop their playing, both individually and as a team. The session will feature guidance on any current repertoire, as well as interpreting the music and working together as an ensemble.
Individual Masterclass
Students will have the benefit of one on one masterclasses with members of the Young Professional Quartets and an International Artist. Each musician will lead a class for up to 20 students for their specific instrument. These sessions can hold up to 5 instruments at the same time.
Side-by-side Playing with Students
Students of any instrument will be able to perform alongside high quality performers, gaining invaluable knowledge in how to play as part of a chamber ensemble, as well as improve all-round as a musician. These sessions will also include guidance from the Young Professional Quartet to enhance students' communication skills, both within an ensemble and the audience.
Orchestral Rehearsals
Members of a Young Professional Quartet will sit in and assist with orchestral rehearsals and sectionals, offering essential guidance to students on rehearsal technique, leading a section, approaches to practice and performing as a section.
Orchestral Concert Performance
Members of a Young Professional Quartet will sit in and perform in school concert performances.
This activity is only available as part of a Residency.
Create
Enhance creative, communication and critical thinking skills in a variety of collaborative and fun activities.
Composition Workshops
Focused towards GCSE and A level, students' compositions will be performed by PSQ professional musicians in an environment for exploration and experimentation. &nsbp; Students will benefit from having their pieces performed live and the opportunity to receive feedback on aspects such as instrumental technique, developing musical ideas and musical structure.
Instrument "taster" sessions
An interactive presentation to 60-100 younger students, featuring an introduction to the chosen instrument, mini-performances and interactives games to inspire the early stages of learning. These sessions can be led by either the Young Professional Quartet or an International Artist and are a great way to encourage students to pick up a new instrument.
Children's Choir Project
Students will be involved in a performance of Richard Rodney Bennett's ‘The Insect World’, 4 songs for children’s choir and string quartet.
This activity includes two rehearsal sessions with the Young Professional Quartet, culminating in a school concert performance and elements of explained performance by the quartet to benefit the students in the audience.
This activity is only available as part of the Three Day Visit or Residency.
Collaborative Music Creation Workshop
A Young Professional Quartet and an animateur will lead a collaborative music creation workshop with a groups of students of any age to compose a number of pieces over the course of 2/3 days, culminating in a concert event performed by the students and the quartet.
This is a very open event, inclusive of non-music students, and can also be a way of involving three or more separate groups from a family of local schools.
This activity is only available as part of the Three Day Visit or Residency.
Junior Strings Day
A variety of events for younger string players, who can be brought in from other schools for a day of activities with a Young Professional Quartet. This could include ensemble pieces for a variety of instrument combinations and the creation of a string orchestra, taught in sectionals.
Inspire
Expand musical knowledge and experience a wide range of styles and genres through activities led by PSQ professional musicians.
General Presentation Sessions
An interactive session with a Young Professional Quartet and International Artist, involving participants of all ages as much as possible and encouraging lots of questions. PSQ musicians will demonstrate and explain what we do as professional musicians, perform sections of 2 contrasting pieces, ask for observations and present a rhythm quiz based on TV theme tunes. The level of these sessions are appropriately adjusted depending on the age of the audience, and can be aimed at non-musicians and the wider school community.
For older audiences, such as sixth form, the performance and discussion of this activity can also be used to boost the learning of other departments.
e.g Shostakovich history/politics, Impressionist - art/french, contemporary - maths.
Young String Orchestra Project
Your schools string players will be involved in a performance of Russel Keable's “Fanfare and Song” for Young String Orchestra (of varying levels of ability) and string quartet.
This activity includes two rehearsal sessions with the Young Professional Quartet, culminating in a school concert performance and elements of explained performance by the quartet to benefit the students in the audience.
This activity is only available as part of the Three Day Visit or Residency.
Educational Presentations
Linked with curriculum, aimed at sixth form, a philosophical discussion about the role of classical music in society. Topics can span a wide range of subjects and can tie in with school departments such as art, history, mathematics and modern languages.
These presentations are very interactive, encouraging responses and input from the students. Where appropriate, the extracts would include music from the formal evening concerts, as well as a range of different styles from the Classical Era to present day.
Teaching Resources
Aimed at teachers and students, including articles, useful information about chamber music and a handbook on tips for teaching and learning Chamber Music.
Length of Visit
PSQ school projects can range from a two day visit to an academic year residency, with the majority of our activities fitting into any format. Every project will have your school paired with a Young Professional Quartet and an International Artist, who will perform in a formal evening concert and lead all PSQ activities as part of your school visit. Our team will work with you to create a schedule for the project that best fits around your school day, and are available to answer any questions about creating a PSQ visit.
