Teaching Chamber Music to Young String Players

PSQ Founder Graham Oppenheimer’s article is featured in the the first 2021 Newsletter edition of the European Chamber Music Teachers’ Association.

Discussing his experience teaching and coaching chamber music to young musicians at Chetham’s School of Music, many of whom had never played in a chamber ensemble before, Graham explains how there are many more facets to teaching students than just how to master their own instrument. Part of the role of a chamber music tutor is “helping the students to manage relationships within their groups, with the difficulties that differences in emotional, technical and musical maturity can bring.”

Speaking with many previous students who are now performing internationally as chamber musicians, the article also highlights how formative and invaluable these “lightbulb“ experiences can be on musicians in the early stages of their education:

It lit a fire in me and engendered a love for and importance of chamber music that has lasted ever since
— Cellist Jonathan Dormand (2004-06, award winning Verona Quartet USA, Quartet in Residence Oberlin Conservatory)
